From Tviberi glacier starts Tviberi river – influx of Mulkhura river, which flows from Mulakhi community to Mestia and merges with Enguri river down in Latali. Tviberi gorge is very narrow and wild. It is off bitten trek and this hike is hardest one in one day hikes from Mestia.
Tviberi glacier trek description
Trek starts from village Jabeshi, 12 km east from Mestia, at altitude 1600 meters above the sea level. Glacier starts at altitude 2300 m. Trail is very wild hard and extreme. Route to glacier takes up to 6 hours one way. Both ways will take up to 10 hours. Easier is to take shorter trail but very steep which leads to the viewpoint from where travelers will see glacier. Viewpoint is on the altitude 2500 m and both ways will need 6 hours.
Tour includes transportation from Mestia to Jabeshi and back. Otherwise tourists can stay in Jabeshi. Also this treck can be included in classic Mestia-Ushguli trek as extra day.
Hello,
I was yesterday in the Tviberi trail. The track on the right bank had been mostly lost to land slides, more or less from the 1st stream (from the village) until nearly reaching the abandoned house. Half of this stretch is totally lost and plainly dangerous. Very dangerous. You must walk steep slopes within the forest to avoid those land slide areas … which fall directly into the river. I would not like to do it again. This is not trekking but adventure.
Now, having said that, you can walk from the village in left bank, but this leads you to a natural snow/glaciar bridge over the river just before one of those nice meadows. Again, reaching the snow bridge is dangerous since you must pass a very steep slope (only gripping vegetation). If you fall, you go directly into holes…
So please, update your information. Reaching the glacier needs two days AND equipment. Not a trek, IMHO.
Thank you.
Yes in such places better to have local guide, or at least first consult with locals.
